There are many reasons why you may be better off renting an apartment, even if you can afford to buy one. For starters, you don't need to be committed to a long term lease. If your job or life situation changes, you can easily move without penalty. Renting is also more flexible, meaning you can easily change your mind about which neighborhood you want to live in or how big of a place you need. Finally, renting typically comes with less responsibility than owning a home. For example, you don't have to worry about repairs or maintenance.
From an economic standpoint, it may make more sense to rent. For one, rental prices have been going down, while home prices have been increasing. Additionally, your monthly mortgage payment will be a lot more than your rent payment, even if the mortgage rate is low. And, if you decide to sell your home in the future, you may not recoup all of your investment.
